Naw’leans Revisited

typewriter lit by neon

It was a return trip, a bucket list type of thing. My memories had faded of this city, home of a favorite author, full of amazing architecture and wonderful food. A steamboat sung and paddled on the Mississippi, memories of the riverbank quickly replaced… Continue Reading “Naw’leans Revisited”

Beached Whale

abstract of water rushing over a rock that looks like a skull

She made a mistake, and died from it, sinking into the spongy, bubbling sand on the Atlantic shore of Colonsay. Careless, injured or impaired, old or tired, she came inshore too far and lost the tide, hemmed in between dune and sandbank and outcropping… Continue Reading “Beached Whale”

The Road to Big Bend

leafless winter tree silhouettes against a cloudy sky

Under an interrupt-this-broadcast gray sky. Headed west toward the quiet edge of Fort Worth the sky gets bigger. Deep in January the land is naked, exposing the razor burn hidden by the green in spring in summer. But winter is honest. And beneath the… Continue Reading “The Road to Big Bend”

Insect

I am an insect, carapaced, visor-faced and joyful. Smaller than other travellers, I fight the air’s viscosity and feel its every rip and eddy, its waves of coolness under trees and its warmth over sunlit fields and tarmac. You hear me before you see… Continue Reading “Insect”

Five-Point-Two Miles

And so, I went walking car dodging, road hopping, side walking past a greyscale alley. You went with me, held me back when foot slipped into traffic and life flashed memories. She went with me, yelling about walking exactly two-point-six miles to the sea.… Continue Reading “Five-Point-Two Miles”

Gulf of Finland

Can I use my miles to get more miles? They never expire. Flea market to closet. A calm naked swim in Simhall, then smoke sauna. Have a Lapin Kulta Premium.  Find out who’s where. Angie’s singing. She sways and scat sings, the guitar rolls.… Continue Reading “Gulf of Finland”

Wanted: Travel Narrative

Guide and luggage in front of 1970s UK tour bus

As I sit in the warm dining room of JS Graustein, I relax with a warm cup of tea as we settle in for our next Folded Word chat. #Wanted is the brainchild of that discussion. Now that the Editor in Chief has taken over acquisitions I wanted to find out what she’s looking for in submissions as we bring in a new editorial for the future. This article will look in depth at the topics, length, and details for the perfect Travel Narrative submission. As we got deep into conversation, one thing became clear with submissions of any kind. The submission must explore human interaction with the landscape as well as make the landscape the main focus and all other inhabitants of the land secondary to the narrative. Below you will find the formula for your Travel Narrative submission that will ensure it follows our submission guidelines.

Resistance is Futile

We pull up outside the house and look over at this pale sandstone building in the corner. A For Sale sign leans to the right and trees bend in from the left. It’s an odd looking house. Small church-like windows dot the stone as… Continue Reading “Resistance is Futile”

Little London by the Sea

It was my first time in Brighton this summer, sometimes known as little London by the sea. I love coastal cities. I love the way they bring two worlds together and offer everybody everything all in one beautiful sprawling landscape. But Brighton has more… Continue Reading “Little London by the Sea”
