Editor Profile: Kristine Esser Slentz

Hi guys and welcome to another inside look at the people who make Folded Word what it is! This week I had the pleasure of speaking with our Assistant Editor, Kristine Esser Slentz. We discussed every day life in the Big Apple, her work with the press, and more!

1.

Folded Word: Who are you and what is your job at Folded Word?

Kristine: My name is KRISTINE, and I’ve been an Assistant Editor since February 2016.

2.

Folded Word: What is the day in the life of an editor like?

Kristine: Typically, my responsibilities include creating artwork for poetic pieces, being a reader, and representing the press/magazine at industry events.

3.

Folded Word: How did you become an editor?

Kristine: A couple of years ago, while I was still living in Indianapolis, I was looking to contribute more to the poetry community. At the time, I couldn’t afford workshops (or sometimes even attend events with a cover), so I started doing some research online. This is when I stumbled across Folded Word and reached out to volunteer. They invested in me right away, and I’ll always be thankful to them for that.

4.

Folded Word: When you’re not working at the press, what do you like to do?

Kristine: Well, I am a poet myself! Right now, I am earning my MFA in Creative Writing (poetry) from City College of New York (CCNY). At CCNY, I help with the graduate reading series and the publication, Fiction. I am also the Features Manager with The Speakeasy Project. So, I stay rather busy with my poetry life!

5.

Folded Word: What are you reading right now?

Kristine: I just finished Unruly by Elysia Lucinda Smith and just started Death by Sex Machine by Franny Choi. Highly recommend both chapbooks!

6.

Folded Word: What are three important tips a writer should follow?

Kristine: I don’t know if I have three, but some great advice from Elizabeth Acevedo: “Write the rat,” which comes from her poem, “For the Poet Who Told Me Rats Aren’t Noble Enough Creatures for a Poem.”

Stay true to your voice and experiences – even if you don’t see them in other areas of literature. The world needs your words.
