Exploring the world, one voice at a time.
And we are back with another inside look at the people behind the Folded Word! This week we are focusing on our Fiction Editor, Casey Tingle. Below are some tidbits about her work, fun facts, and advice for future editors. Thanks for reading this new edition of #EditorProfile!
1.
Folded Word: What is your title at Folded Word and what does Folded Word Press mean to you?
Casey: I am Fiction Editor at Folded Word Press. To me, Folded Word Press is a group of caretakers—but for books! We make sure every chapbook we publish has its own identity and give each the love and attention it deserves.
2.
Folded Word: What is your favorite thing about working with fiction?
Casey: I love experiencing the new stories writers are producing. I am very passionate about polishing a story until it shines, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to work with such amazing writers.
3.
Folded Word: What is your favorite type of literature?
Casey: My favorite type of literature is prose, but I have also come across some prose poetry that I’ve enjoyed. Some of my favorite authors include: Victoria Schwab, David Mitchell, Haruki Murakami, and Patrick Ness, just to name a few (because there are too many to list).
4.
Folded Word: Does being a writer influence your editing?
Casey: I would say that it does in the sense that I know what an author goes through to write a story. I think that helps me connect with them and makes me sensitive in how I respond to their piece. Being a good editor is making the story the best that it can be, and that can be done constructively and without tearing someone else down.
5.
Folded Word: What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue editing?
Casey: I feel like a lot of the same rules apply to both writers and editors: Read widely and a lot. Know writing and grammar rules, but also know when it’s OK to break them. Be familiar with the industry and market you would like to work in (whether it be for a magazine, newspaper, or books).
