From fragments of history, Marcus Speh captures the mysterious spiritual journey of a woman who lived when only men’s lives were recorded: Gisela, a Bavarian princess married off to be the first queen of Hungary, then a prisoner, then an abbess and — some eight centuries later — a saint. As a child capable of communing with horses, our Gisela realizes “her body is connected to every other body,” and “glory…only a reflection in a puddle of words.” Never losing faith with her inner light even as her life ends, she is “strangely serene and happy to embrace a blue beginning.” To read the story of Gisela is to discover a magic that will never stop “as long as the sun shines and the stars turn.”

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:

Folded Word announces the release of its third 2017 title, Gisela: Princess, Empress, Abbess, Saint, an historical fiction novella written by German author Marcus Speh. It features the spiritual journey of Gisela, a medieval Bavarian princess married off to be the first queen of Hungary. Through several twists of fate, she later becomes a prisoner, then an abbess, and centuries later, a saint.

Marcus Speh has woven what remains of the real Gisela in the historical record together with his own extrapolations into the story of a woman who lived before her time. Gisela’s fortitude amidst the loss of homeland, husband, and son comes from a combination of faith and the realization that “her body is connected to every other body is connected to every other body, and glory…only a reflection in a puddle of words.” Speh’s novella captures the reader’s imagination with its world of adventure, history, myth, and mystery.

Gisela: Princess, Empress, Abbess, Saint is currently available in two formats. A sustainably-printed limited edition may be purchased directly from Folded Word while supplies last. An accessible digital edition may also be purchased or borrowed from Amazon’s Kindle shops. A global print edition, to be available from online retailers worldwide, will be released 15 September 2017.

Marcus Speh is a Berlin-based German author who writes in English. Since 2009, he has published more than 150 stories. Gisela: Princess, Empress, Abbess, Saint is his second book.
