PicFic is an experimental journal that boils the essence of short stories down so that they can fit in a mobile phone text message. Even though the official definition of picofiction is a complete story told in 140 characters or less, we are interested in pushing the boundary a bit. We will accept a series of stories that tells one large story (much like TV episodes), as long as each unit is a complete story within itself.
Picofiction’s development as an art form will depend on the willingness of both writers and readers to experiment with the bounds of plot, characterization, motive, and structure. It will work best if it is developed for those who text frequently and enjoy forwarding content that grabs them. From a commercial standpoint, there’s not a whole lot of profit to be made. But wouldn’t it be better for you (or the texting public) to be passing around words with literary merit–words that stir the soul and open the mind–than promises of fast riches or curses from a broken chain letter?
